Of course our coffee is mold-free!

Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about “mold-free coffee. But what is mold-free coffee, anyway?

Mold-free coffee refers to coffee that has been produced and processed in a way that minimizes or eliminates the presence of mold and mycotoxins, which are toxic compounds produced by certain molds. These molds can potentially develop during the coffee's growth, harvesting, drying, storage, and transportation stages if conditions are not properly controlled.

To ensure coffee is mold-free, producers often implement stringent quality control measures, such as:

  1. Proper Drying: Ensuring that coffee beans are thoroughly dried after harvesting to prevent moisture retention, which can promote mold growth.

  2. Controlled Storage: Storing beans in dry, cool, and well-ventilated environments to inhibit mold development.

  3. Regular Testing: Conducting tests for mold and mycotoxins throughout the processing and storage phases to detect and address any issues early on.

  4. High-Quality Sourcing: Procuring beans from reputable sources that prioritize mold-free practices, such as organic or single-origin farms known for their strict quality standards.

You may be thinking at this point: “wow, that sounds like a lot of effort to make sure coffee doesn't have mold!” And you’re absolutely right! But the funny thing is, EVERY coffee we buy (or have ever bought, for that matter) is held to these standards.

The thing is, our importer quality controls each coffee both in its native country (where its grown) and when it arrives in the U.S. to ensure that the coffee is mold-free—not only because of all this “mycotoxins” talk but because coffee that has mold on it is ruined. And if I received coffee that was ruined en-route to me, I’d send it back to our importer!

Another way of saying it: the coffee we buy will always be mold-free because we only buy top-grade specialty coffee that has been meticulously grown, harvested, dried, quality-controlled multiple times, stored properly, and correctly delivered to us.

Is it becoming obvious that this was a clever marketing ploy created by a company?

It’s simply not an issue if you’re buying high-quality coffee.

As always, we will continue to bring you the best coffee we can find!

Cheers,

Casey
