Celebrating Advent With Littles

Our Advent set up this year. And an amazing book that we read daily during Advent.

making advent meaningful to children

If you are interested in what our family does to celebrate Advent with our littles, I created a document that has everything broken down by what we do each week. It is full of rich metaphors and I know it will bless your family as it has very much blessed mine. I include all the resources I use and the materials needed. I hope you will check it out!

An excerpt from week 1

Here’s an excerpt from Week 1 as a preview:

For our preparation during week 1, we talk about preparing our house through cleaning and organzing as a way of physically getting ready to recieve the Christ child and the Christmas season. We talk about how we would receive Jesus if he were a physical guest in our house. So, we spend the week doing minor clean up, some deep cleaning, and the children get special jobs focused on organzing their clothing and toys. We also clear out a lot of clutter. A very important guest is coming and we want our space to be tidy! This is the week we also begin reading the stories in the Advent and Christmas Stories book by Estelle Bryer and Janni Nicol. This book is so incredible. We read two a night by candlelight when the children are all tucked into bed. It is pure magic!

At the end of week one, on that Sunday, we choose to do our special Advent time after dinner. This first Sunday we focus on recognizing that God made the Mineral kingdom, or as we call the first candle, the Light of Stones. Here is the verse I say before lighting the candle:

The first light of Advent is the light of stones

that shines in the crystals and sea shells and bones.
